TARANTULA    BOB DYLAN

Publisher is Dan McLeod

Published by Georgia Straight, Vancouver, British Columbia , Canada December 1970

This supplement is in Large tabloid format folded to 8 1/2" x 11 1/2" as issued with 16 pages in triple column. The front page features a illustration in psychedelic colors of Bob Dylan playing electric guitar. Evidence of original horizontal crease, and slight edge wear otherwise this is a complete and near fine copy of this scarce fragile ephemeral item. ( SEE PHOTOS)

A Special issue supplement to the regular edition issue for Dec 2nd - 9th of the Georgia Straight, Canada's leading underground newspaper, entirely devoted to this unauthorized printing of the" singer's self-suppressed, amphetamine-fueled novel Tarantula, along with letters from his attorneys threatening a lawsuit and trying to suppress publication. There are also black and white photographs and illustrations of Dylan and others along with the text from Tarantula and also with the Georgia Straight's response to Dylan's lawyers on page 15.

A rare unauthorized state of the only book written by the legendary singer at the height of his influence, when his poetry and songs were transforming both folk and rock music, arguably the most important American singer/musician of the last 50 years. Dylan was within two weeks of finishing "a few changes" to the galleys when a motorcycle accident halted his work on the book.

This is believed to be one of the scarcest and earliest of the pirated bootleg printings of Dylan's only book Tarantula, having been written & completed between 1965 and 1966 but not published until 1971 by Macmillan New York. The supplement offered here is in near fine condition.

ALSO = Georgia Straight Volume 4 Number 138 for December  2nd - 9th Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada 1970 with the word TARANTULA in magenta color against a black background. This issue is a large tabloid format folded to 8 1/2" x 11 1/2 as issued with 24 pages. Paper is in good condition but with page 19/20 part of page has been removed. This counterculture underground newspaper contains advertisements some rock music concerts, local Vancouver political and cultural & environmental (very early Greenpeace) articles with lots of photographs and illustrations (Ron Cobb, Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers) and the famous unclassified advertisement section

This is the issue that contains the scarce SEPARATE 16 page supplement of the Bob Dylan Tarantula bootleg version.

MORE ABOUT Tarantula is an experimental prose poetry collection by Bob Dylan, written in 1965 and 1966. It employs stream of consciousness writing, somewhat in the style of Jack Kerouac, William S. Burroughs, and Allen Ginsberg. One section of the book parodies the Lead Belly song "Black Betty".  Reviews of the book liken it to his self-penned liner notes to two of his albums recorded around the same time, Bringing It All Back Home and Highway 61 Revisited.

Dylan would later cite Tarantula as a book he had never fully signed up to write: "Things were running wild at that point. It never was my intention to write a book." He went on to equate the book to John Lennon's nonsensical work In His Own Write, and implied that his former manager Albert Grossman signed up Dylan to write the novel without the singer's full consent.

Although it was to be edited by Dylan and published in 1966, his motorcycle accident in July 1966 prevented this. The first 50 copies were printed on A4 paper by the Albion underground press of San Francisco in mid-1965. The type-written pages were bound in yellow paper with a large red tick-like arachnid pictured on the front. Numerous bootleg versions of the book were available on the black market through 1971.

MORE ABOUT == Bob Dylan (born Robert Allen Zimmerman, May 24, 1941) is an American singer, songwriter, musician, painter, and writer. He has been influential in popular music and culture for more than five decades. Much of his most celebrated work dates from the 1960s, when he became a reluctant "voice of a generation" with songs such as "Blowin' in the Wind" and "The Times They Are a-Changin'", which became anthems for the Civil Rights Movement and anti-war movement. Leaving behind his initial base in the American folk music revival, his six-minute single "Like a Rolling Stone", recorded in 1965, enlarged the range of popular music.

Dylan's lyrics incorporate a wide range of political, social, philosophical, and literary influences. They defied existing pop music conventions and appealed to the burgeoning counterculture. Initially inspired by the performances of Little Richard and the songwriting of Woody Guthrie, Robert Johnson, and Hank Williams, Dylan has amplified and personalized musical genres. His recording career, spanning more than 50 years, has explored the traditions in American song—from folk, blues, and country to gospel, rock and roll, and rockabilly to English, Scottish, and Irish folk music, embracing even jazz and the Great American Songbook. Dylan performs with guitar, keyboards, and harmonica. Backed by a changing lineup of musicians, he has toured steadily since the late 1980s on what has been dubbed the Never Ending Tour. His accomplishments as a recording artist and performer have been central to his career, but his songwriting is considered his greatest contribution. Since 1994, Dylan has also published seven books of drawings and paintings, and his work has been exhibited in major art galleries.

As a musician, Dylan has sold more than 100 million records, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time. He has also received numerous awards including eleven Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and an Academy Award. Dylan has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Minnesota Music Hall of Fame, Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and Songwriters Hall of Fame. The Pulitzer Prize jury in 2008 awarded him a special citation for "his profound impact on popular music and American culture, marked by lyrical compositions of extraordinary poetic power." In May 2012, Dylan received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama. In 2016, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature "for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition".
