The Air Battle over England signed Wing Commander John Freeborn DFC*, Battle of Britain pilot with No 74 Squadron

JS(CC)83 RAF Battle of Britain cover, dual numbered JS(BB)3 as part of our Battle of Britain mini-series, which the title appears in German. The words 'Die Luftschlacht um England' is the name the German Luftwaffe give to the period we refer to as the Battle of Britain. The cover artwork depicts German Dornier Do17 bombers attacking convoy Bread on the 10 July 1940 and are shown being attacked by Spitfires of Nos 74, 111 and 222 Squadrons. The cover also depicts a German 1914 Iron Cross First Class with 1939 First Class Bar as awarded to some of the German Luftwaffe airmen who saw service in WWI and WWII.

The cover bears a 20p Charity Label showing a Dornier 17 with cachet for the 60th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain shwoing a Stuka Ju87 dive bomber dated 15 September 2000.

The cover has been hand signed by Wing Commander John Freeborn DFC*, who flew throughout the Battle of Britain and amassed 13 victories. He was one of the pilots scrambled to intercept the enemy bombers and escorting fighters attacking convoy Bread and he managed to attack one of the Do 17 bombers.

The cover has been carried aboard a Jaguar XK120 first stopping at Croydon Airport and then at the Battle of Britain Memorial on Purley Way before travelling to Hornchurch common, the former site of RAF Hornchurch. Then after recrossing the Thames, following the coast line retracing a route similar to that taking by Convoy Bread passing through Ramsgate, Manston and Dover before reaching Folkestone. Then loaded aboard Eurotunnel and taken underneath the English Channel to Calais.
