Lovely Pair of Nautical-Themed Artwork by

John Stanton Ward (UK)

Listed Artist

(JOHN WARD CBE RP Hon PS)

Ready to Hang

In Matched Vintage Wood-Backed Frames

I'm not sure of their age. The artist did this sort of work in the 1960s. However, he lived to the age of 110 (passing in 2007), so they could also be later.  Judging by their look and feel, I would place them between 1955 and 1975.

Size measurements, approximate:

Frame: 17" x 23"

Mat opening: 11-1/2" x 17" inches

John S. Ward was an illustrator at heart, and he would often produce "colored drawings" like these.  They appear to be ink drawings finished in a watercolor wash.  One of them has some features (people) added on the deck in pencil -- as well as a second signature at the top in pencil.

Please see condition details below. The frames, in particular, are not of the highest quality, so the material has age-related chipping.  You might choose to have them reframed.

John Stanton Ward

John Ward was born in Hereford on 10 October 1917 and was educated at St Owen's School and the Hereford School of Arts and Crafts, 1932–36 before going on in the latter year to the Royal College of Art, where he won the Drawing Prize before war service in the Royal Engineers, starting in 1939. He returned to the RCA in 1946 and won the Travelling Scholarship for 1947, then worked for 'Vogue' magazine from 1948 to 1952 before becoming a fully independent artist and portrait painter. He was elected ARA in 1956, RA in 1966, but resigned in 1997 in reaction to the ‘Sensation’ exhibition, which included such artists as Tracy Emin and Damien Hirst. He was also a member of the New English Art Club and a former Vice-President of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. He was appointed CBE in 1985. He was also a freeman of the cities of Hereford and Canterbury, having lived in Kent for most of his career.

He exhibited at the RA, the Trafford Gallery, Agnews, the Maas Gallery, the Arthur Jeffries Gallery and had several exhibitions at Hazlitt Gooden & Fox. Retrospective exhibitions also took place at the Royal Museum Canterbury in 1987, Agnew’s in 1990, and again at Canterbury in 1997. In 1956 he painted a mural of the ‘Baptism of Christ’ for the Church of Saints Cosmos and Damian at Challock, Kent, and the village again commissioned another from him in 1999, ‘Christ’s Entry into Jerusalem’, to mark the Millennium. He pursued book illustration in his recreation and in 1999 he was commissioned to illustrate Guy Lee’s translation of ‘Ovid in Love’ for John Murray. Ward died June 14, 2007.

Condition Details:

Here you have my best good-faith attempt to disclose all noteworthy issues. Keep in mind, though, that vintage/antique items always show their age -- (Don't we all!?) -- so please expect that there will be something about this item (or lot) that's not perfect. Even if it's "mint" or "new-old-stock," it will still be somehow touched by Father Time.

- The artwork has some age-related foxing, as you see.

- The frames are not high-end, and they are showing their age, with significant chipping of the black material.  I think they have lovely character as-is (at least, for display in an informal setting), but you can always have them reframed.

- As you see, one (the one with red on the ship) came in contact with some moisture, which made its way onto the mat inside.  Faint staining on the mat, but not affecting the drawing/painting. Please look closely before you bid.

- There are also some spots and dust behind the glass.  Again ... you can always reframe!

Please supersize all photos for detail, and ask any questions before bidding.

As with all my listings (unless explicitly stated otherwise), this comes from a NON-smoking environment.

Important!  RETURN POLICY and Shipping Loss/Damage

I work hard to maintain Top-Rated eBay Seller status and 100% positive customer feedback by:

(a) offering quality vintage merchandise with honest descriptions, and

(b) providing outstanding, professional customer service.

This item may be returned up to 14 days from purchase for either of two reasons:

- Dead on arrival: an item that is broken so it does not function, and the listing did not state this, or

- Significantly not as described: A major flaw or discrepancy vs. what was stated in the listing.

SORRY, WE CANNOT NEGOTIATE PARTIAL REFUNDS. The merchandise must be returned in its entirety, and in the same condition as it was sent, in order to qualify for a refund.

(Of course, shipping loss or damage is a different matter; that is fully covered by insurance.)

HOWEVER ...

If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the product or service -- even if it may not be grounds for a return -- please contact me first, before leaving negative (or even neutral) feedback.  I really do listen, as evidenced by my 100% positive feedback, and I would very much like to know what could have been done better.  Thank you!
