FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

DO YOU ACCEPT RETURNS?

We accept 30 day returns.

We accept returns, providing that a request is made no later than 30 days after the item arrived. You are welcome to contact us via the messaging system to arrange a return or you may wish to use the eBay processes.

HOW FAST DO YOU SHIP?

We ship daily.

We build no actual delay into how we operate - we post daily! - but we are careful not to let eBay give the impression of delivery that leaves you disappointed.

Otherwise we would be promising a service that the mail provider doesn't offer.

All items paid before 7am are packaged either the night before or at 7am and posted that morning prior to the first Royal Mail collection at 11:15am Monday to Friday.

WHAT PACKAGING DO YOU USE?

We use new and high quality packaging.

We usually use brand new neon green or bright red 100% virgin polymer bags, manufactured in the UK, which are the highest quality of mailing bags available on the market.

For larger items we also have standard grey polymer bags, new cardboard boxes, foam wrap, brown paper and materials to build a fortress around the item where it is breakable or vulnerable.

Letter sized items maybe sent in Sealed Air Mail Lite envelopes with bubble material that absorbs impact to guarantee high performance cushioning and to make sure the item arrives in the condition photographed.

WHAT ARE YOUR SHIPPING OPTIONS?

We have four options but usually use Second Class Royal Mail - this has a 98% chance of arriving within 3 days.

You may also choose:
  • 2nd Class Signed For - 98% chance of arriving within 3 days.
  • 1st Class Mail - 93% chance of arriving the next working day.
  • Special Delivery - 100% chance of arriving the next working day.
All estimates are based upon Royal Mail's stated delivery times - no individual eBay seller who dispatches the item within the time limit on their listing can in anyway influence the speed or lateness of third parties.

HOW DO I GET MY ITEM? I'M AT WORK DURING THE DAY!

We can send it to a nearby location or to a friend or relative.

eBay runs a Click & Collect program, which means you pay and then choose where the item is sent, with over 1,000 participating locations, such as Argos and Sainsbury's.

You can select where you want to send the item to.

You'll be sent a text or email when your item arrives and have a maximum of 7 days to collect.

It is also possible to set up a "guest address" in PayPal where you nominate a friend or family member and the item be sent to them. Make sure you do this before purchase, so that it appears on the seller's screen so that the purchase is covered by eBay and PayPal.

You can also have the item sent to work but we recommend that you upgrade to signed for in some types of work premises.

CAN I SEND A COURIER?

Yes.

If you want to collect in person that is fine.

You can also send a courier if you wish, providing that they arrive Monday to Friday and not weekend.

If you want us to drop off the parcel then couriers who seem to be within reasonable distance of Ashford, Kent include DPD, Parcelforce, Royal Mail, UK Mail, Yodel, Hermes, CollectPlus, UPS and Palletforce.

IS YOUR POSTAGE A GOOD DEAL?

Perhaps. We know some people think postage should be "free".

But the reality is that since the UK Government took the tax benefits away from posting in from the likes of Jersey and the Channel Islands,  'free postage' has mainly disappeared or has a lot of strings attached.
  • One big e-commerce platform charges a £79 annual subscription.
  • The lowest price items sent from merchants on this platform are excluded with an on top charge per item
  • Another trick is a hidden high minimum spend limit the basket stated only in the Terms and Conditions.
  • Some platforms show the item price and introduce Postage pricing right at the end of the purchase.
  • On eBay you may get free postage from 5,000 miles away despite a British Flag on the listing.
  • Other times the item price might look a good deal but then you will see that a calculated charge is added...
We pay the stamp price - usually £2.90 - use Royal Mail - and pay roughly 15% on top of the stamp price in charges.

If you think we have over-estimated the P&P charges, let us know and we will see what we can do.  We can fill a box, weigh items for a better estimate, use couriers or anything else - Mark (me!) is a Counter Trained former Post Office employee.

WHAT BUYER PROTECTION IS THERE ON EBAY?

eBay Money Back Guarantee & PayPal Buyer Protection.

eBay Money Back Guarantee - protection against item's not arriving or against being provided with items which come with an unexpected problem.

PayPal Buyer Protection - additional protection against unauthorised purchases.

If you are new to eBay you can also read up on the seller's reputation by clicking on the number next to their name e.g. http://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/seigneur-terraces will show we have been registered for approaching 15 years and our feedback score.

On top of that, sellers have a dashboard that the customer cannot see, called "defects" and enough of them sees the seller removed.

We look after buyers with genuine issues where the buyer doesn't get what they paid for.

DO YOU POST INTERNATIONALLY?

Yes - we post directly to customers and do not use the GSP.

The reason we do this is that we know the old school eBayer - our customer - does not prefer set postage charges, additional time for a middleman and facilitated customs charges.

We know that the old school eBayer understands that paying less means the item will be sent international standard and not an expensive service; if you want to find out more about Royal Mail, then type "Sending Mail - Royal Mail", "Our Prices - Royal Mail" and "Royal Mail International Coverage" into Google.

The Global Shipping Programme that eBay run is not connected to how we operate in any way as we do not overestimate the value of the item, the opposite is probably a fairer reflection of what we do.

HOW DO YOU DETERMINE ITEM CONDITION?

We examine items under bright lights.

Our process is to put garments on a mannequin and "do up" buttons, zips or fasteners to check they are working. We then photograph the item under 270 watts of lighting on a mannequin, turning the item around so it is exposed to the camera. Finally we will lay the garment down on a special surface and photograph inner labels. Sometimes we will photograph the inside of garments or the item overlaid with the tape measure. Any exceptions will be added to seller notes.

Please note that we know that there are sellers with a rating system e.g. this is 5 stars out of 5 stars or 9/10 but to be honest with you we feel that this attracts in the type of buyer who will tend to be dissatisfied when the item turns up used and now brand new and aren't interested in creating dissatisfaction for short-term gain. We want to reveal obvious faults and show good pictures, though we will say some of our early pictures are shadowy and bad, but we are gradually redoing them all!

HOW DO YOU DETERMINE SIZE?

Simple. We try always to estimate UK size.

If an item fits a customer across the chest or hips it has a good chance of being wearable.  We will normally describe the size based upon our knowledge of UK average sizing.

Sometimes our description of size will coincide with the manufacturer's label, sometimes it won't, particularly when the clothes are made for a non-UK market, are vintage, or are youth brands.

Please do note that we photograph also the manufacturer's original size label, whether it be what we agree with or not. We want to accommodate customer knowledge also of their favourite brands.

For example. we want the item to be described in UK size terms, so for example an item which we have described as 21" pit-to-pit would fit a 42" Chest, so we would describe it as Large regardless of the manufacturer's label.

How do you do your best to get me my parcel?

We take loss prevention steps.
  • Every item we send has a Tamper-evident hologram with a unique serial number.
  • Every parcel has a barcode reference number that can be input into royalmail.com/confirm.
  • Customs labels are handwritten in a way to deter interest from deliverers and officials.
  • We tend to use bright coloured bags which are memorable and easily identifiable.
  • We do not pre-pay for labels or drop and go, leaving to chance what happens to our items.
  • We do pay postage directly to the shopkeeper, making sure he is interested in doing a good job.
CAN I COLLECT IN PERSON?

Yes.
  • Monday to Friday collection is pretty much always available.
  • Weekend by special arrangement. (Likely to be some availability Saturday, Sunday less likely).
  • As a guide we are within walking distance of the town centre in Ashford, Kent.
  • We are happy to accept cash and prefer cash for payment.
  • Please note that the platform blocks address details being exchanged prior to payment.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I HAVE A PROBLEM?

Contact us via the eBay messaging system
(as a dispute through eBay or worst still PayPal should be a last resort...).

Naturally would rather work with buyers to resolve issues, through the eBay messaging system than suddenly see a formal out-of-the-blue complaint opened.

Please note that whilst we accept that there is both a eBay Money Back Guarantee and also a PayPal Buyer Protection scheme, we are pretty much logged into eBay all day but seldom login to PayPal - let us know if you are awaiting a reply on that platform.

We would always prefer to simply resolve issues together and better still avoid them overall.

Please note that for a formal case we will ask for a concise description of the problem, how it occurred and for photographs whilst for not received claims we expect your help in tracking down the parcel, going to the sorting office etc. - after all we are trading partners!

We will do our best to immediately resolve authentic issues which are genuinely our fault.

ARE YOU A GOOD E-BAYER?

We have a reasonable record for a seller of used goods.

If you sell new, simple, unbreakable items to the UK only, or via the Global Shipping Programme to protect your feedback and insist upon high price tracked and insured postage it is easy to have a high eBay rating.

If you sell used item, complex, breakable items around the World, often with no tracking, then there will be differences of opinion around item condition, item description, whether the item arrived etc.

We still have maintained a good record given that we sell used.
  • Our eBay account started in the UK on the 26th May 2004 - almost 700 weeks ago.
  • In that time, we have bought and sold thousands of items.
  • Our ratings scores and feedback for Communication, Dispatch time and P&P are good.
  • Please see http://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/seigneur-terraces
  • As we buy on eBay, rather than being 5000 miles away or a conglomerate we are real eBayers too.
