Smokin' Joe Frazier now officially 'Gallo Geezer'
Joe Frazier, the former heavyweight champion of
the world, who with Muhammad
Ali made big news in their three historic battles, has entered
the world of geezer hood. Tuesday, Joe turned 65 years old and
is now eligible for Social Security, which now is walking-around money for him.
Think of that. It seems like only
yesterday that I covered Joe in his Philly gym while in preparation for the big
March 8,1971, showdown with Ali at Madison Square Garden.
There, that day, was Joe Smokin' and
snortin' under the smart tutelage of his trainer, Yancy (better known as Yank) Durham.
Frazier,
who developed his strength working in the slaughterhouses of Beaufort, S.C., held the heavyweight crown for
three years and after losing it to George
Foreman continued to distinguish himself as a true champion in
and out of the ring.
Joe's history as a man and champion is long and
positive, but we'll let the sports history books tell it for now.
On Jan. 26
the Friars Club will honor him with one of its famous roasts. Joining in the
good-natured slapstick will be boxing promoter Lou
DiBella, Bert (The Hat) Sugar, Chuck (Blood) Wepner and stand-up
comics Vince August, Esther
Ku, Jeff Pirrami, Reese
Waters and radio personality John (Goumba
Johnny) Sialiano.
It's
typical of Joe that he will be doing this for a worthwhile cause. All of the
proceeds will go to the Sunshine Committee, an organization created for
the entertainment of New
York City's underprivileged children and the elderly.
The show
should be a lot of laughs, and if Joe gets rid of the cane he's been sporting
lately, he may get up on the stage and do some groovin' himself.
I remember
some years ago when Joe brought his singing and dancing group called The
Knockouts to the Rainbow Room and knocked 'em out in the aisles.
