Up for sale, a 1974 Gibson SG Standard in excellent condition and perfect working order. Built at the Gibson factory in Nashville for Norlin-era Gibson, this guitar is a great example of a late '70s SG with a rare slab ebony fretboard. Featuring a set of "Tarback" humbuckers, which have slightly lower output compared to many "PAF" style pickups, this guitar has great cut and chime. Plugged in, the bridge pickup has a surprising twang and clarity, but with a smooth top-end, while the middle and neck positions have plenty of warmth and girthy bass response. Weighing in at just 7lbs 2oz, this guitar is quite light and has a big, barking acoustic voice with great note clarity and sustain. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with low action and solid intonation, this SG has a tone that roars with the best of them, delivering a sound that is undeniably classic Gibson.

The three-piece mahogany neck features a fairly slender C shape at the nut, growing in depth and shoulder as you move up the fretboard and filling out with full baseball bat chunk in the highest registers. The uncommon slab ebony fretboard boasts small block inlays and the original Gibson frets which have good meat showing moderate uniform wear on frets 1-3, with lighter wear predominantly beneath the plain strings until fret 7. The action is low and slinky, with solid intonation and no buzzing or dead spots. The nut measures 1 9/16" in width. On the headstock, the original Gibson-branded, Schaller-made tuners turn smoothly and hold pitch well with clean chrome plating and tulip buttons.

Just below the volute the headstock does show a slender headstock repair. The repair has been stable for decades, smooth to the palm and professionally addressed structurally and cosmetically.

On the body, all of the electronics work as they should, with original CTS pots which date to '74, untouched solder joints, stock tone caps, and Switchcraft jack and pickup selector toggle. The body features the previously mentioned Tarback humbuckers, "harmonica" bridge, black speed knobs, and small pickguard reminiscent of the first SGs of the 1960s. The bridge also has ample room for adjustment either up or down, something fairly uncommon given the more shallow neck angles of '70s SGs. Cosmetically, this guitar shows light buckle rash on the back and an assortment of minor nicks and dings on the body, with only one nick of note on the neck profile behind fret 9. The original Sunburst nitro lacquer finish is deep and rich, highlighting the grain of the mahogany below. The chrome hardware has plenty of shine too.

The original hardshell case is included. This case retains its original latches, with the "Gibson" silkscreen on the exterior, stock handle, and purple interior.
