AMERICAN BALD EAGLE National Emblem of the United States Bird Prey MI Postcard

Postcard image shows a view of  a BALD EAGLE sitting on tree branch.  Blue skies and part of another tree in the background.

ON THE BACK:   "Adult bird, photographed in Michigan.  Nests in both the upper and lower peninsula.  Fast becoming extinct, there are only about 550 breeding pairs remaining in the 48 contiguous states, with more in Alaska.  Protected by federal law since 1940, the bald eagle is still being shot in large numbers.  The immature eagle is brownish black in color and often mistaken for a hawk.  The definitive white head and tail feathers of the mature eagle aren't obtained until three years or more after birth."
