Il nome mortaio trae origine dal latino volgare mortarjius, derivato a sua volta dal più antico mortare (fare le parti).  La necessità di frantumare e polverizzare per percussione alcuni materiali, risale a epoca remota ed era inizialmente praticata soprattutto utilizzando le cavità naturali e, poi, forse ancor prima della molitura con la macina, con i mortai quasi sempre di pietra. I mortai più antichi sono in pietra dura (utilizzati, per esempio, da Etruschi e Greci), marmo o alabastro. Anche la Bibbia ne testimonia l’antico uso: «La manna veniva pestata nel mortaio per preparare focacce». 

Il marmo si forma attraverso un processo metamorfico da rocce sedimentarie. Le sue molteplici colorazioni e consistenze derivano dalla presenza di diversi minerali che, mescolandosi fra loro, creano sfumature e venature uniche ed irripetibili. Da millenni il marmo ha un posto d'onore nell'architettura e nella decorazione di ogni epoca e stile. La sua durevolezza lo rende adattabile sia a opere monumentali che a dettagliate e pregiate miniature, donando eleganza e raffinatezza  agli oggetti.

The name mortar derives from the Latin vulgar mortarjius, derived in its turn from the oldest mortare (making the parts). The need to crush and pulverize some materials for percussion dates back to the remote era and was initially practiced above all by using natural cavities and, perhaps, even before the milling with the millstone, with the almost always stone mortars. The oldest mortars are in hard stone (used, for example, by Etruscans and Greeks), marble or alabaster. Even the Bible bears witness to its ancient use: "The manna was crushed in the mortar to make cakes".

Marble is formed through a metamorphic process from sedimentary rocks. Its many colors and textures derive from the presence of different minerals that, mixing together, create unique and unrepeatable shades and veins.
