La Venere di Milo è una scultura di marmo greca tra le più note del mondo, estremamente riconoscibile e simbolica è priva delle braccia. La Venere di Milo risale al 130 a.C. circa: un'opera ellenistica, sebbene si tratti di una scultura che fonde i diversi stili dell'arte del periodo classico. Venne ritrovata spezzata in due parti nel 1820 sull'isola greca di Milo., dopo alcuni interventi di restauro, fu collocata al museo del Louvre dove è tuttora conservata. Afrodite si leva stante col busto nudo fino all'addome e le gambe velate da un fitto panneggio.  Non si conosce precisamente quale episodio mitologico della vita di Venere venga rappresentato: si ritiene possa essere una raffigurazione della Venus Victrix che reca il pomo dorato a Paride. Capelli raccolti, larghi fianchi fecondi, colpisce l'atteggiamento naturale della dea, ormai lontana dalla compostezza "eroica" delle Veneri classiche dei secoli precedenti. Celebrata da artisti e critici, la Venere di Milo fu da molti considerata una delle più significative rappresentazioni della bellezza femminile. 

Il marmo di Carrara è il marmo per antonomasia. Viene estratto a Carrara, una piccola città celebre per il suo paesaggio dominato da montagne bianche caratterizzate dai bacini marmiferi a cielo aperto, situata lungo la costa della Toscana settentrionale. I primi ad apprezzare l’aspetto artistico e commerciale del marmo di Carrara sono stati i Romani, che lo utilizzavano per la costruzione di palazzi imperiali o per la realizzazione di statue già dal primo secolo a.C. L’industria marmorea raggiunse però il suo massimo prestigio verso la fine del Quattrocento con l’arrivo di grandi personalità del Rinascimento. Il paesaggio delle cave di Carrara è la conseguenza dell’interazione tra uomo e territorio, dalle originarie condizioni naturali di poche rocce bianche si è arrivati fino ai giorni nostri con un aumento imponente dell’ampiezza delle aree marmifere, che hanno dato luogo a uno scenario unico al mondo.

The Venus of Milo is one of the most famous Greek marble sculptures, extremely recognizable and symbolic without arms. The Venus of Milo dates back to 130 B.C. about: a Hellenistic work, although it is a sculpture that blends the different styles of art of the classical period. It was found broken in two parts in 1820 on the Greek island of Milo. After some restoration work, it was placed in the Louvre museum where it is still preserved. Aphrodite stands with her naked body up to her abdomen and her legs are veiled by a thick drapery. It is not known precisely what mythological episode of the life of Venus is represented: it is believed to be a representation of the Venus Victrix which bears the golden knob in Paris. Gathered hair, broad fertile hips, affects the natural attitude of the goddess, now far from the "heroic" composure of the classic Venuses of the previous centuries. Celebrated by artists and critics, the Venus of Milo was considered by many to be one of the most significant representations of female beauty.

Carrara marble is the marble par excellence. It is mined in Carrara, a small town famous for its landscape dominated by white mountains characterized by open-air marble basins, located along the northern Tuscany coast. The first to appreciate the artistic and commercial aspect of Carrara marble were the Romans, who used it for the construction of imperial palaces or for the creation of statues since the first century BC. The marble industry, however, reached its maximum prestige towards the end of the fifteenth century with the arrival of great Renaissance personalities. The landscape of the Carrara quarries is the result of the interaction between man and territory, from the original natural conditions of a few white rocks to the present day with an impressive increase in the size of the marble areas, which gave rise to a scenario unique in the world.
