DESCRIPTION
Christian Johann Heinrich Heine was a notable German poet, journalist, essayist, and literary critic, best known outside of Germany for his early lyric poetry. This poetry was often set to music in the form of Lieder by notable composers such as Robert Schumann and Franz Schubert. Heine's later verse and prose were distinguished by their satirical wit and irony and their often radical political content, that led to many of his works being banned by German authorities. This however helped to increase his popularity, making him one of the best known artists of the 'Young Germany' movement.
Whilst he worked as the translator for this collection of works by Heine, Charles Godfrey Leland was a notable writer in his own right, who like Heine travelled extensively. Lelan was predominantly renowned for his interest in folklore and folk linguistics, and publishing many books and articles on American and European languages and folk traditions.
