INTRO
By
placing a chord of a different quality
in front of the 'Target Chord' we can introduce a bit of tension that
will be resolved when the target chord is played.
This book looks at ways of delaying the target chord in order to create tension.
'Tension creates forward motion'
quality: the quality of a chord or scale is decided by a couple of its notes, namely, the third and the seventh. These notes are called 'guide' tones. If we look at the examples below we'll see how altering the guide tones affects each C root chord.
The
C chord with its three primary quality configurations:
Cmaj7 C7 Cmin7
To
delay the arrival of the 'Target chord' precede
the 'Target Chord' with an 'Approach
Chord'. This pairing of different quality chords with a shared root
often takes place within the space of the one bar.
