An attractive and decorative map of The British possessions in the Mediterranean Sea, covering Malta, Gozo, Gibraltar and the Greek islands of Corfu, Paxos, Zakynthos (Zante), Cephalonia, Ithaca, Lefkas, (St.Maura) etc.

Beautifully illustrated with vignette engravings of Gibraltar, Valetta, Corfu, Vathi Ithaca and two views of fishing boats.

The
level of detail can be appreciated from the close up images provided.
 
Original outline hand colouring. 

 An excellent example of the preferred Montgomery Martin edition without the central fold.
 

Fine unmarked condition. Free of repairs or restoration.

Printed on heavy grade paper, blank verso and unfolded.


John Rapkin was a mapmaker who was as concerned with the aesthetic value of his work as well as cartographic content.  His fine maps are distinguished by the trademark decorative borders, vignettes and title displays. Rapkin worked in close association with the equally respected publisher John Tallis. The publishing rights of many of the maps passed to The London Printing and Publishing Company circa 1850.
