| | | Synopsis: | Rosie (1998) In a juvenile lockup, a new ward answers questions: she's Rosie, 13, no parents, a sister Irene, a brother Michel. In flashbacks we find out what happened. She lives with Irene, who's 27, whom Rosie knows is in fact her mother, but that's their secret. Irene's brother Michel, unemployed, a compulsive gambler, comes to stay with them. Around then, Irene meets Bernard; they come to care for each other. This leaves Rosie without attention, so she puts all her adolescent hopes and romantic fantasies into a relationship with Jimi, a good looking kid she sees on a bus. Is it adventures with Jimi that land her in juvie? Once she's there, why doesn't he answer her letters?
Nowhere Man (2008) A drama about a fortysomething man who entertains fantasies of a different life. Staging his apparent death, he moves to an island but pines for his former existence, and wonders if he could return to it.
Rosie (Rosie: The Devil in My Head) (1998) Directed by Patrice Toye, Rosie centers around the mystery surrounding a 13-year-old girl's placement in a juvenile detention center. The young girl's life has always been shaky--until her arrest, Rosie (Aranka Coppens) had lived with her single mother and gambling addict brother, Michel (Frank Vercruyssen). When her mother (Sara de Roo) began dating again, Rosie found herself becoming increasingly lonely, until she spots a handsome young man called Jimi (Joost Wijnant) riding the bus, not realizing that her attempts to start a relationship with him may leave her heartbroken.
Nowhere Man (2008) A man finds out how the other half lives and discovers he was better off at home in this dark comedy. To the outside world, Tomas (Frank Vercruyssen) appears to lead a charmed life -- he has a beautiful home, a good job, and a lovely wife Sara (Sara De Roo) who cares for him. But while he's good at disguising it, Tomas is deeply unsatisfied with his existence, and he often dreams of running away and starting over. One day, while browsing in a used bookstore, Tomas finds a passport with a photo of a bar in the Caribbean tucked inside. Tomas takes the passport and while running errands later the same day, he impulsively runs into a burning house to fake his death, escaping out a door in the back. Tomas flies to the Caribbean using the passport he found and takes over the bar in the snapshot, but it isn't long before he becomes disenchanted with his new life -- the tavern attracts no business, the townspeople make no secret of their dislike of him, and the village's economy is in sad shape. After five years of struggle, Tomas throws in the towel and goes back home, but he discovers Sara, a presumed widow, had married another man, Michel (Koen De Graeve) and can't bring him back into their home, though she is willing to cheat on her new husband with him. Nowhere Man received its North American premiere at the 2008 Montreal World Film Festival.
