Thomas Kitchin (1719 - 1784)
Thomas Kitchin, Hydrographer to King George III, map engraver and cartographer, was born in London in August 1719.  He was apprenticed to Emanuel Bowen in 1732 and later collaborated with him on "The Large English Atlas" (1755), which included all the counties in England and Whales.  Kitchin had his own shop in Holborn, London, where he produced numerous maps, as well as books, on an array of topics, from watercolor techniques to topography.  Because of his skills as an engraver, Kitchin often partnered with other prominent mapmakers of his time; in 1749, he worked with Thomas Jefferys on "The Small English Atlas," and he engraved John Mitchell’s famous map of the United States – known as the "Mitchell Map" – in 1755.
