DESCRIPTION

In two volumes complete.

From the revival of the art under Cimabue and the alleged discovery of engraving by Finiguerra, to the present time: with the ciphers, monograms and marks, used by each engraver; and an ample list of their principle works.

Together with two indexes, alphabetical and chronological to which is prefixed, an introduction, containing A Brief Account of the Painters of Antiquity.

With a dedication to His Royal Highness The Prince Regent.

With an errata page to rear of each volume.

With an engraved portrait of Bryan to frontispiece. Bryan was an English art historian, art dealer and connoisseur. His book, Biographical and Critical Dictionary of Painters and Engravers, was a standard reference work throughout the 19th century, and was last published in 1920, the year before his death.

With previous owner's ink inscription to verso of front free endpaper of first volume 'Albert Way. Trinity Coll. Cambridge. Feb. 1826' and a further ink inscription to recto of rear endpaper in first volume.


CONDITION

In a full calf binding. Externally, sound but worn to boards and extremities. With slight loss to spine labels. Front hinge of second volume strained. Internally, firmly bound. Bright but with occasional spotting more pronounced to first and last few pages. With off-setting from frontispiece to title page.
