HA31c commemorative cover with artwork by Tony Theobald shows Spitfires of 12 group during the Battle of Britain and an inset picture of Air Chief Marshal Sir Trafford Leigh-Mallory. The cover is flown in a Shackleton of 8 Squadron RAF from Gibralrar to RAF Lossiemouth..

Cover bears Gibraltar Nimrod stamp cancelled with Gibraltar OPening of the RAF Museum postmark.

Air Chief Marshal Sir Alasdair Steedman KCB CBE DFC 

Air Chief Marshal joined the RAF in 1941 and on completion of his initial flying training he was appointed to a commission in March 1942. During the War years he flew on operations with 241 Squadron in North Africaand Italy and served a short tour as ADC to the AOC Desert Air Force. In 1945 he flew with 2 Squadron from bases in Liberated Europe.
In late 1945 he took up a staff appointment as DP2 at the Air Ministry and in 1948 he was appointed Officer Commanding 39 Squadron. In 1949 he moved to Aden as Officer Commanding 8 Squadron and in 1951 he returned to the UK tocomplete the CFS course and to serve as Deputy Chief Instructor at 201 Advanced Flying School. He was appointed Wing Commander in 1956 when he was Chief Instructor at the Central Flying School. In 1957 he proceeded on loan to the Royal Ceylon Air Force for duty as Station Commander RCyAF Katunayake. 
Promoted to Group Captain in 1962 he completed a tour as Station Commander RAF Lyneham and for a short period in early 1965 he served as Group Captain Strategic Operations at Headquarters Transport Command. Promoted Air Commodore in 1965 he was seconded for service as Chief of the Air Staff Royal Malaysian Air Force until 1967 when he became Director of Defence Plans and later Director Operations Staff at the MOD.
Promoted Air Vice Marshal in 1969 he completed tours as Assistant Chief of the Air Staff at the MOD as Senior Air Staff Officer, Headquarters, Strike Command andCollege Bracknell. He became the UK Military Representative to NATO with the rank of Air Chief Marshal on 26 October 1977
