DetailsLatvia's first commemorative coin for 2016 recognizes the importance of the agricultural sector in the country. The coin depicts a grazing Latvian Brown Swiss cow, symbolizing the milk production in Latvia in the folk tradition and in real life. The same design was also featured on Lats, the old Latvian currency. The motif is accompanied by the issuing year '2016' and, at the bottom of the inner circle, the name of the issuing country "LATVIJA". In the ring of the coin crown include the twelve stars of the European flag.

Cow’s milk continued to dominate drinking milk products in Latvia in 2015, accounting for an overall value sales share of 97%. This dominance reflects the fact that cow’s milk products, most notably fresh milk products, are a daily staple in most Latvian households.
