Newcastle won the Cup for the fourth time in a Final fought out by two very evenly matched teams. On the whole, Newcastle showed themselves the tougher, cleverer and speedier side, and at its best their forward?line was a dazzling and irresistible combination.

The game began with a display of 'Wembley nerves' from both sides, with a lot of wayward passing. Blackpool were the first to settle down, and in the first twenty minutes they generally succeeded in keeping the ball in the Newcastle half. Mortensen's header was cleared off the line by a defender, and then Mudie failed to make the most of an opening provided by 'Matthews' clever dribble.

Matthews, in fact, stood head and shoulders above every other forward on the field, but in the first half the rest of the Blackpool forward line seemed incapable of capitalizing on his brilliant wing play.

Five minutes after the interval Milburn scored a dramatic goal to put Newcastle in front. Robledo's pass beat the offside trap and Milburn was away to tuck the ball past Farm from fifteen yards. Blackpool never recovered from the shock of going behind, and Milburn scored an even better goal five minutes later. Receiving a clever back-heel from Taylor, he fired in a terrific left foot drive from twenty five yards out which had Farm completely beaten.
