binding: this is the full leather with pictorial gilt --finest binding -- the one that was used for the much later "reprint edition"
The price for this may seem high, but I have seen this year in cloth [ worn] sell for as high as $450 on ebay!

Contents: filled with "about 800 recipes" - receipts for just about everyone in a small town back then [read the long list in the title] , including how to spot counterfeit money. Beers, wines, ciders, sodas, confections, breads, cakes, pies, puddings, syrups, soap and laundry, stains, ointments, health remedies [including "cures" for cancer - please don't rely on them] and so much more! Text and boards very secure. Tips are worn through and have been touched up. Some wear to the spine ends [not too bad for its age though]. Joints and inner hinges are in good shape - the front inner has been taped between the 2 free endpapers. Some pencils scribbles were erased opposite Chase's portrait [no other scribbles!]. Pages are very clean wit just a few spots, a few folds, and no rips that I saw. Some adult writing on rear paste-down, I can't quite read it - looks like a recipe for something. Gilt remains quite bright and leather is still soft.
I have no idea how this gem survived in such great shape - these books were used and abused by the pioneers!

and remember -this book is very old and may have accumulated bad smells along the way [musty basement/ mildew/ smoke] - I have found that dryer sheets in them for a few months makes a world of difference! some of my books get sold right away so please consider using this trick before deciding to return it! As far as I can tell -this book smells lightly musty.
