 TROPICAL PLANTAE
pigeon peas

Pigeon peas, scientifically known as Cajanus cajan, are a nutritious and versatile legume that is cultivated worldwide for its edible seeds and various uses. Also known as Congo pea, gandules, or red gram, pigeon peas are a staple ingredient in many cuisines, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions.

The pigeon pea plant is a shrub-like perennial that can reach a height of 3 to 4 meters. It has compound leaves with three leaflets and produces vibrant yellow flowers, followed by elongated pods that contain the seeds. The mature seeds are small, round, and range in color from yellow to brown. They have a nutty flavor and a firm texture when cooked.

Pigeon peas are highly valued for their nutritional content. They are a rich source of protein, dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals. The seeds are often used as a protein-packed ingredient in soups, stews, curries, and rice dishes. They can be cooked and enjoyed on their own or combined with other ingredients to create a variety of delicious and nutritious meals.

To grow pigeon peas, a warm and tropical climate is preferred, but they can also tolerate subtropical conditions. The plants are hardy and can withstand drought and poor soil conditions. They prefer well-drained soil and full sun exposure. Pigeon peas are typically grown from seeds, which should be soaked in water before planting to help with germination. Regular watering is needed until the plants are established, after which they become relatively low-maintenance.

Caring for pigeon pea plants involves occasional pruning to remove dead or damaged branches and to promote better airflow and sunlight penetration. They are nitrogen-fixing plants, meaning they have a symbiotic relationship with certain soil bacteria that helps enrich the soil with nitrogen. This property makes them beneficial for crop rotation and improving soil fertility.

Interesting Fact: Pigeon peas have a long history of cultivation and are considered one of the oldest domesticated crops. They are believed to have originated in the Indian subcontinent and have been grown for thousands of years. Pigeon peas have played a significant role in traditional cuisines and agricultural practices, providing a valuable source of nutrition and sustainable farming methods.

In conclusion, pigeon peas are a versatile and nutritious legume that is valued for its edible seeds and various culinary uses. Whether used in soups, stews, curries, or rice dishes, pigeon peas add protein, fiber, and a delicious nutty flavor to meals. Cultivating pigeon pea plants not only provides a sustainable source of nutrition but also contributes to soil fertility and agricultural diversity.

Dead or Alive?

Plants die. So, to determine if your plant is still among the living, scratch a small area of bark on the trunk. You can rub it with a coin or fingernail. If you see brown or black underneath, then the plant is dead. If you see green, then the plant is alive and will leaf out again. If the time is fall through spring, the plant is likely in full or partial dormancy. If the time is during the growing season, then the leaves may have temporarily dropped as a self pruning measure. This acts as a reset switch for the plant and is normally just temporary.
