pitanga

Pitanga, scientifically known as Eugenia uniflora, is a tropical fruit tree native to South America. Commonly referred to as Surinam cherry or Brazilian cherry, pitanga is cherished for its vibrant red fruits, which are known for their tangy-sweet flavor. The tree itself is also highly ornamental, making it a popular choice for gardens and landscapes.

The pitanga tree is a small to medium-sized evergreen tree that can reach a height of up to 20 feet (6 meters). It has dense foliage with glossy, elliptical leaves that are dark green on top and lighter underneath. The tree produces small, star-shaped white flowers that give way to round or oval-shaped fruits.

The pitanga fruits are approximately 1 inch (2-3 cm) in diameter and have a thin, smooth skin that turns from green to bright red when fully ripe. The flesh is juicy and encases a single seed. The flavor of pitanga is described as a combination of sweet and tart, similar to a blend of cherry and pineapple. The fruits are often consumed fresh, used in juices, jams, jellies, or incorporated into various desserts and culinary preparations.

Caring for pitanga involves regular pruning to maintain its shape, remove dead or diseased branches, and promote better airflow. The tree is generally pest and disease-resistant, but it's always a good idea to monitor for any potential issues and take appropriate measures if necessary. Fertilizing the tree with a balanced fertilizer in the growing season can help promote healthy growth and fruit production.

Interesting Fact: Pitanga is not only appreciated for its delicious fruits but also for its medicinal properties. The fruits are rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, making them a healthy addition to one's diet. In traditional medicine, different parts of the pitanga tree, including the leaves and bark, are used for their potential anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anti-diabetic properties.

In conclusion, pitanga, or Surinam cherry, is a tropical fruit tree that offers both ornamental beauty and flavorful fruits. Its vibrant red fruits, with their sweet and tangy taste, make pitanga a favorite among fruit lovers. Growing a pitanga tree allows you to enjoy its tasty fruits and appreciate its visual appeal in your garden or landscape.

Dead or Alive?

Plants die. So, to determine if your plant is still among the living, scratch a small area of bark on the trunk. You can rub it with a coin or fingernail. If you see brown or black underneath, then the plant is dead. If you see green, then the plant is alive and will leaf out again. If the time is fall through spring, the plant is likely in full or partial dormancy. If the time is during the growing season, then the leaves may have temporarily dropped as a self pruning measure. This acts as a reset switch for the plant and is normally just temporary.
