The geographer Mentelle offers his services for the Encyclopédie Panckoucke.
Edme Mentelle recalls the memory of Panckoucke who had confided to him that he had thought of him to write the Geography part of the Methodical Encyclopedia [this very important work published by Panckoucke and his descendants, appeared in 166 volumes, from 1782 to 1832]. “As for the conditions,” you add, “they will be those I made with M. Suard, whom you know. M. Suard told me at the time that it was he who told you about me ”. But he has just learned that this part had been allocated to Mr. Masson de Morvilliers. “I did not complain about the change in your views; I persuaded myself, however, that my works, which are said to be good, could not have earned me this change […]. I would believe that I was lacking in honesty and missing out of place indifference, if I did not assure you that I would be very flattered to work on the new edition of the Encyclopedia, including the clause [gloss] that there will be a honest time to do well: because it must be the first goal of any writer ”.
