Lice or red mites on chickens are a pain because infestations are usually heavy, and the insects' life cycle is difficult to thwart. However, there is a natural chicken lice and mite treatment with diatomaceous earth. Diatomaceous earth for chickens works to effectively remove the mites and lice in a safe way. As the fine powder coats their coop, it begins to repel the existing lice or mites, while stopping the insects' egg cycle.
Diatomaceous earth consists of porous diatoms that will absorb moisture and deodorize the area. It's the absorbent properties of DE that are so effective in dehydrating insects, providing long-term protection from lice and mites.
External Application: Control Red Mite in coops with a thorough application to wall, floors, perches, nest boxes and cages at 10-15g per square meter, pay special attention to joints, cracks & crevices where mites hide during daylight hours. Also apply directly onto birds and add to dust-baths.
Cats and Dogs (Fleas and Ticks)
Usee 1 to 2 times a week or may be used daily to treat a real bad infestation.
Apply liberally directly to animals coats (avoiding the eyes and nose), rub or brush in quite firm.
It can be dusted on beds blankets, bedding and carpets. As this is a natural product, it can be used in the home without any worries.
In order to kill the parasites, they must come into contact with the DE powder and will usually die within 48/72 hours.
Animal Feed Additive (Mineral Supplement)
DE provides a broad spectrum of naturally occurring minerals. These include potassium, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphate, sodium, titanium and others. Numerous accounts of gain have been reported when adding DE to the ration. With the lack of mineralization in modern grains/feeds, it isn't hard to think of the mineral benefits from a very finely ground natural organic mineral product. Most livestock will acquire the 'taste' for the mineral if a small amount is mixed in with other feeds/grains/meals.
Absorption and deodorization are natural features of DE. These functions will continue to happen as undigested powder passes through with manure/animal waste.
It is recommended that approx. 3 - 5% of the dry weight is added to the daily food ration. Mix the required amount into damp/moist feed, use the following as a guide to mix into feed:
Poultry: 5g per 100g of feed (no egg withdrawal)
Pigeons: 2-3g per 100g of feed
Kittens: about 1/2 teaspoon
Cats: 1 teaspoon
Puppies: 1/2 to 3/4 teaspoon
Small Dogs (up to 15kg): 1 teaspoon
Medium Dogs (15-40kg): 1 tablespoon
Large Dogs (40-50kg): 2 tablespoons
X Large Dogs (50kg+): 2 heaped tablespoons
Horses: 75-80g to 150g in daily feed
Pigs: 2-3g per 100g of feed
