The art of speed! The racing posters by Erich Strenger shows the creativity of commercial art in every example. He was simply the best. Of course he was, he was Porsche’s hand picked in-house graphic designer.

As a freelance graphic designer, from 1951 he designed sales catalogues, driver’s manuals, advertisements as well as many printed materials for Porsche. But his main passion were the racing posters he got to design for the company from 1951 to 1987.

Mountain championships, endurance races, Formula 1, Spa, Daytona, Sebring and Le Mans after Le Mans – no matter what series, no matter what track – Porsche’s racing victories formed the bread and butter of Erich Strenger’s work.

Large, colorful and with modern typographic elements, he portrayed the glory moments of Porsche motorsport.

In 1964 the 911 production began and the new model was an instant hit. By 1977 Porsche factory had engineered it into legendary status adding it’s famous turbo charger creating the “The 1977 Porsche 935”

Over the years, Porsche has develop some amazing technologies and launched some of the most legendary vehicles on Earth.

SILVERSTONE

Speaking of the sensational true story and Hollywood film, Ford vs Ferrari, the 1977 British Grand Prix Formula One race held at Silvertone a month after the endurance event featured in this Advertising Poster, was won from pole position by local driver James Hunt, driving a McLaren-Ford, with Austrian driver Niki Lauda second in a Ferrari!

The 6 Hours of Silverstone is an endurance sports car race held at Silverstone Circuit near the Northamptonshire villages of Silverstone and Whittlebury. First run in 1976 as part of the World Sportscar Championship, the race continues today with the FIA World Endurance Championship.

The factory Porsche team, under the guise of Martini Racing, earned their first of many victories for drivers Jochen Mass and Jacky Ickx.

STORY/DESCRIPTION:

On May 15th, 1977, the Kosset World Manufacturers 6 Hours Silverstone 230 lap race took place.  Twenty eight cars on the starting line, 6 Porsche 935’s and one BMW 320. The star was a brand-new all-singing all-dancing 2856 cc Twin-Turbo 935/77.

The story of the race wasn’t difficult to tell; the Porsche 935 Martini car driven by Jochen Mass and Jacky Ickx dominated in every way taking the lead early, the other Porsche, the Kremer car followed and only could take over when the works Porsche had to change its brake pads. The Loos cars were unable to compete, since Bell retired early and Stommelen met a hare.

The win of the Martini car was questioned for a while when Jochen Mass decided to continue on slicks when the rain set in, but when Jantke made it clear that he should come in he followed suit, and thanks to the hydraulic jacks he kept the lead and won, with the Kremer car second, Stommelen third & Peterson/Kelleners Faltz 320 in fourth.
