GREAT FASHION DESIGNS OF THE VICTORIAN ERA

PAPER DOLLS IN FULL COLOR

by

Tom Tierney

Often characterized by flowery, prudish and fussy tastes, the Victorian Era neverthelesss produced a surprisingly delightful array of fashionable female attire that frequently contradicted attitudes of day.  In this splendidly detailed and historically accurate collection, noted artist and fashion authority Tom Tierney recreates a rich selection of these great fashions, spanning a wide range of outfits and styles.

Ladies' evening and formal attire, particularly, often exhibited a wide decolletage and exposed shoulders.  By the 1880's voluminous hoopskirts had given way to nattow skirts and a variety of artifical aids used to accent the female figure.  Two dolls based on the young Queen Victoria and the Empress Eugenie of France, (a friend of the English Queen), and a total of 28 meticulously rendered costumes capture the elegance and opulence of clothing dating from 1840's through the fin de siecle!

Included in this wonderful, full color collection are Victoria's wedding gown (1840), a white satin creation trimmed with bobbin lace, a brilliant, tiered afternoon dress (1856) by Gagelin, a lovely "peacock" dress designed in 1864 by Charles Frederick Worth, an  elegant off the shoulder ballgown trimmed with garlands of roses (1873), A Dolly Varden walking suit (1872) dinner and ball gowns of delicate lace (1900) an elegant promenade gown with dotted net trim (19000 by Drecoll, a town dress of raspberry taffeta (1900) and many other stylish gowns, dresses and suits.  Captions and informative text provide information on the costumes and their creators.

Here is an easily affordable glimpse into the Victorian world of High Fashion that's sure to delight paper doll collectors, designers, fashion historians, nostalgia buffs and lovers of Victoriana.!
