For sale is an 1883 copy of Essays.  Containing the collected essays of George Eliot written for the Westminster review, Leaves from a Notebook, Impressions of Theophrastus Such, the Lifted Veil and Brother Jacob, the book includes a preface from Charles Lee Lewes. The book was published by Colonial Press Co., Boston and New York.  There is no date for the book publication, but the preface was dated 1883, so that is a good date to infer.  The book is hardcover, no dust jacket, with an embossed spine. The book is 5.75" x 8.5" x 1.5" with 518 deckle pages, plus 4 illustrations.  The frontispiece protected by the original tissue.

The book is in very good condition, especially considering its age. The binding is intact and is tight and square, although the hinges have torn, and the webbing is visible in the front and back. The cover shows some wear and bumped corners, but it is in surprisingly good condition.  There is minor foxing on the endpapers.
