A South African guide to the dangers of the sea and shore detailing various fish and other marine life that may bite, sting or poison the unwary beachgoer. Includes advice on how to avoid such encounters and how to treat them if they occur. Also covers a few possibilities of angling and boating accidents along with advice on how to save a person from drowning and how to perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and heart massage. Privately published and presumably printed in pretty small numbers.

"This supplement to ICHTHOS 44, Newsletter of the Friends of the J.L.B. Smith Institute of Ichthyology, does not cover the obvious sea and shore dangers such as shark attack, sunburn, unfortunate encounters with whales and their calves, surfing alone, et.c., as they have been fully covered in many articles appearing in the popular press. The inspiration and guidance for this supplement was provided by Margaret Smith's popular Sea and Shore Dangers: Their Recognition, Avoidance and Treatment, which has long been out of print." (From the author's introduction).

A note is then added on the inside rear cover: "This booklet was originally intended to be a supplement to ICHTHOS 44. However, it grew into a small publication and the writer plans to expand it to include shark attack, and republish it in 1995 as a booklet that will be available for sale to the public. ICHTHOS members are asked to read it carefully and to write in with their comments and suggestions. Any observations stemming from personal experience will be particularly welcome."

The text was written by Marion Baxter, ICHTHOS Editor, with help from the staff of the JLB Smith Institute of Ichthyology. Though the front cover states "ISBN 1011-7490" this is not actually an ISBN, it is in fact the ISSN of ICHTHOS.
