Drosera capensis - Cape Sundew Fresh Seeds

Thank you for your interest in our Cape Sundew seeds! This variety of Drosera capensis is easy to grow and also one of the most spectacular with its mobile leaves that roll up over the victim. Long-lasting flowers stand above a clump of glistening green leaves with sticky gland stalks. The plant is really pretty when the sun shines on the dew and also at night when they glisten from electric lighting.

Originating from South Africa, Drosera capensis thrives on a sunny windowsill, conservatory, or cold greenhouse. It is very good at catching smaller flies such as midges and mosquitoes, up to small houseflies, and can be grown outside in summer.

To grow your Cape Sundew seeds, follow these instructions:

• Nutrient-poor soil: These plants grow in nutrient-poor soil, like rainwater and plastic pots with drainage holes in the base.

• Carnivore mix: Using a tray to sit the pots in is an easy way to water them. Ideally, keep the soil moist but not sodden. Ordinary potting compost is no good as it has too many nutrients. Instead, create a “carnivore mix” using 50% Sphagnum moss and either perlite or sand. Rinse your moss before using it. You can also buy a ready-made carnivorous plant mix. Fill the pot nearly to the top with the soil mixture.

• Watering: Water the pot from the tray and let the soil soak up the water. When watering, be sure to use rainwater (which you can collect yourself) or distilled/demineralized water. Sundews like Drosera capensis don’t respond well to the dissolved minerals present in regular tap water.

• Sprinkle seeds: Sprinkle a few seeds on top of the carnivorous soil mix. You can place cling film over the pot to keep the soil moist, or not, and make sure the soil does not dry out. Then, it's the waiting game.

• Growing conditions: These plants catch tiny fruit flies, midges, and small houseflies. There's no need for a dormancy period with these plants, however, cold or drafty windows and low temperatures can prompt them to shed their leaves until things warm up again around Springtime.

Please note that these plants are very slow growing, and the image of the sprouted seedlings is taken after many weeks.
