One packet of more than 40 seeds

Viola jooi, the Transylvanian violet, is a spring-bloomer with fragrant pink or light purple flowers and dark green leaves. Through summer and autumn, plants continue to bloom and produce seed capsules, but the later flowers are cleistogamous -- inconspicuous, having no coloured petals. This is a characteristic common to several Viola species. When the seed capsules open, seeds may be thrown a short distance from the plant. Self-sown plants may appear in nearby flowerbeds and lawns.

Seeds are collected in 2021 from the plants pictured, grown in our gardens in Edmonton, Canada: hardiness zone 3 (to -35C).

Germination can be slow and irregular. It is best to sow seeds outdoors in autumn or early winter so that they will be exposed to fluctuating temperatures in late winter and early spring. Some seeds will germinate in the first spring. Some may need a second cycle of seasonal temperatures. Refrigeration may be effective, but actual winter and spring temperatures will likely enable a greater rate of germination.

Seedlings will bloom in spring their second year and form small clumps after another year or two.
