One packet of more than 100 seeds

Fragaria virginiana (wild strawberry) produces pretty white flowers in early spring and small, delicious, intensely flavoured fruits in summer. They can be grown in a sunny or lightly shaded alpine garden or on the edge of a woodland garden. Sending out runners in summer, they may eventually form a shallow-rooted ground cover where there is no competition (or too much shade) from larger plants.

Seeds are collected in 2023 from plants grown in Edmonton, Canada: hardiness zone 3 (to -35C). Our original plants came from the Rocky Mountains in Alberta.

Fresh seeds, in late summer or early autumn, may germinate within two weeks at room temperature. Mature or fully ripened seeds will likely be dormant. If seeds do not germinate at room temperature within three weeks, they are dormant and require a wet-cold period of around 8 weeks to break dormancy, either outdoors in winter (under snow cover if available) or in a refrigerator.

Germination is irregular. When fresh, a few seeds may germinate very quickly at room temperature, and then a few more, and a few more, over a period of several weeks. Other seeds, or older seeds, may need a wet-cold period or seasonal temperature cycling. Sow seeds in a pot or seed tray over moist potting mix. Cover lightly with coarse sand or grit and press in. Keep moist. If germination does not begin after four weeks, move the sowing outdoors (in winter) or into a refrigerator for 8 weeks or longer. Seeds should then begin to germinate at cool room temperature or in gradual spring warmth. Move crowded seedlings into separate pots. Move small plants into the garden when they have four or five leaves or in late summer. Expect flowers and fruit the following year.
