One packet of 50 or more seeds.

Primula veris, the Cowslip, opens fragrant, bright yellow flowers in early spring. Along with seeds selected from yellow-flowering plants, these packets will contain seeds from orange- and red-flowering plants, which are not pure Primula veris but garden hybrids, sometimes called Sunset Shades.

Seeds are collected in 2022 and 2021 from the plants shown, grown in Edmonton, Canada, hardiness zone 3 (to -35C).

Primula veris will establish itself in rich, moist soil in a situation that is sunny in spring and lightly shaded in summer -- under leafy shrubs, for example, or on the sheltered side of a hedge, or in a meadow among taller, later-growing perennials.

Seeds of Primula veris, the species, require wet-cold stratification prior to germination (conditions simulating autumn, winter, and spring). Seeds of the coloured forms, being garden hybrids, will germinate easily at room temperature without cold treatment.

Sow seeds over moistened general purpose potting mix, press in, and cover lightly with coarse sand or grit. Some seeds will begin to germinate within 2-3 weeks. When seedlings have been removed from the seeding container and potted on, give the container a cold period, in the refrigerator or outdoors under snow cover, for around six weeks. Remaining seeds may then germinate indoors at room temperature or outdoors in spring warmth.

Move small plants into the garden in late summer. In cold climates, help the plants through the winter with a light covering of dry leaves and then, ideally, a deep covering of snow. Expect flowers the following spring and in many springs to come.
