Description: Jack London's classic tale of the Klondike Gold Rush has
delighted audiences of all ages for almost a century. From the moment we meet
the magnificent dog Buck and his rugged master John Thorton (Rutger Hauer), we
are drawn to follow their inevitable destiny. We first meet Buck at Judge
Miller's ranch in sunny central California, where he is a prized and pampered
house pet. Stolen by a workman and sold to pay off a gambling debt, Buck is
beaten into submission by a dog breaker, then transported to the north, where he
is resold to a French-Canadian mail courier, Perrault. There he is trained as a
sled dog and quickly learns the rules of this harsh Darwinian world: kill or be
killed; eat or be eaten. Buck, bowing to the law of the club and fang, must
confront Spitz, the lead dog of Perrault’s team, and destroy him in a battle to
the death, then take his place at the head of the team. Perrault pushes on to
Dyea, where he reluctantly sells Buck to the tenderfoot party of Charles, his
spoiled wife Mercedes, and her brother Hal. We follow them into the heart of the
arctic darkness, where, at an ominous passage across a crackling spring thaw,
John Thorton meets up with them. Outraged by Clark’s ignorance and abuses, and
Mercedes' foolish self-indulgence, Thorton and Hal come to blows. Thorton downs
him, and cuts Buck out of the traces. The ship of fools pushes on, however, and
within sight of Thorton and Buck repays through the ice and in a matter of
heartbeats is entombed forever in a frozen, watery grave. Thorton and Buck
return to Dawson, where Buck repays Thorton by saving his life in a bar - room
brawl. Then as a last hope to raise money for the expedition to the lost cabin,
Thorton stakes everything he has on a bet that Buck can pull a 1000 pound sled
100 yards. To the amazement of all, and Thorton's tears of joy, Buck does.
Following an unknown trail into uncharted wilderness, Buck and Thorton at last
find the lost cabin. But as Thorton pans a river for gold, Buck finds himself
more and more drawn to the wild wolves that inhabit this wilderness, and to the
inner voice of his own primal past - a voice in conflict with his own great love
for Thorton. Then, just before Thorton and Buck are about to leave with his
treasure, the camp is attacked by the wild Yeehat Indians of the region. Buck
returns to aid Thorton, but in the struggle, Thorton is killed. Buck wreaks a
horrible revenge, ripping the throats of the Indian attackers. But now, with his
last link to civilisation gone, he returns to run with his wild wolf brothers -
lives there still, the Indians say, in the race of timber wolves baring his
tell-tale splash of white on their chests that run among the distant reaches the
north.
