This is an absolutely stunning example of an antique burnished padded 'chapan' or coat from Khiva, in Khorezm, Western Uzbekistan.

I collected this coat myself from Khiva last year from a reputable antiques dealer within the walled city. I work in an antique Asian textiles gallery in London, and that is how I came to have a deep interest in textiles of this region, as well as from my undergraduate degree.

This chapan is made with burnished striped cotton fabric, quilted with raw cotton onto a patchwork or Russian roller-printed textiles that form the beautiful lining. Fragments of silk and cotton adras ikat are found on the edging helping to date this coat to the late nineteenth- early twentieth century.

These robes were worn by the citizens of Khiva during the period of the Great Game, when the Uzbek Khanates played an important role in Eurasian political diplomacy.

This chapan is heavy and is a wonderful example with a particularly beautiful central panel of Russian roller printed lining showing cream and pink flowers on a red/salmon ground.

I am only selling this as I do not have room for it, it is an absolutely exquisite example of this rare type of antique costume from the remote oasis city of Khiva, accessible even today largely though an arduous 18 hour train journey from Tashkent.

This chapan measures:

-over arm length: 139cm
-single arm length:  63cm
-top to bottom: 126.5cm
-underarm to underarm lying flat: 58cm

nb. the style of Khiva chapans includes shorter, almost three quarter length sleeves.
