GORGOSAURUS 2018 CANADA $20 SILVER COIN NGC MS 70 ANTIQUED EARLY RELEASES

This 2018 $20 fine silver antique finish coin features a depiction of the fossilized remains of a Gorgosaurus, a faster relative of Tyrannosaurus rex. Today, their remains are the object of study and fascination. To add to the realistic appearance of this coin, the Royal Canadian Mint has employed a “splash struck” technique, giving each coin a unique shape much like a true fossil.

The coin weighs one ounce of pure silver, and has a limited mintage of just 5,500 coins. Thanks to its antique finish, this coin looks like it was a fossil that’s just been unearthed from Alberta’s Dinosaur Provincial Park. The design effectively mimics a fossilized Gorgosaurus specimen curated at the Alberta Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology. The coin also features a rimless design reminiscent of ancient Roman coins so that every coin in the edition will be irregularly shaped with varying sizes and thicknesses! The coin’s obverse features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
