The Bottle Palm is native to Round Island, Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. This species grows in lowland savannah in fertile soils volcanic rocks among exposed rocks. It is threatened with extinction in the environment and almost extinct, with less than 10 mature trees remained in the wild due to a lack of regeneration and due to the influence of introduced goats and rabbits. However, it is very good well-established in cultivation for its unique beauty in the tropics and subtropics as an ornamental plant. Hyophorbe lagenicaulis is a small, medium-sized palm tree with a characteristic bottle-shaped trunk (hence the common name). up to a height of 3-5 meters. The trunk is massive, thick, gastrocnemius, smooth, gray, with visible scars from the ring, the widest at the base, tapering upwards to the neck of the bottle formed by the shank of the crown, with a diameter of up to 60 cm. In young specimens, the trunk is rounded and regular, and as the palm matures, it will be elongated and distorted. Very young bottle palms often have a covered trunk permanent base of leaves. It is commonly believed that a swollen stump is used to store water, but Hyophorbe lagenicaulis is not a succulent and it is not true.
