In a world torn apart by warfare and upheaval, each is the other's certainty and the guarantee of the survival of the Colony...

A wedge that threatens the fate of a nation...

REVIEWS == The very best storytellers keep their readers glued to the story with plot, character, and a keen sense of the dramatic....

Whyte breathes life into the Arthurian myths by weaving the reality of history into them. == Tony Hillerman

REVIEWS == This book is enjoyable for the same reason that Mary Stewart's The Crystal Cave was.

It presents Merlin as a real person, not a two-dimensional magician/adviser, and explores the real environment of King Arthur's world from Merlin's perspective.

The first person narrative copies Stewart's approach, and works as well.

Impressive historical setting and the rich description of late Roman Britain gives the story a depth not often found in the fantasy genre.

The detailed ironmongery and militarist/feudal bent of the era are well captured.

FROM THE PUBLISHER == Merlyn Britannicus, leader of the Colony known as Camulod, is faced with the task of educating his young charge, Arthur, future King of the Britons. Fearing for the life of his nephew when an assassination attempt goes awry, Merlyn takes Arthur and his boyhood companions Gwin, Ghilleadh, and Bedwyr on a journey that will take them to the ruins of a long-abandoned Roman fort far from Camulod and the only place where Merlyn feels they will be safe.

It is there that Merlyn will enlist the help of this close-knit group of friends to help Arthur learn the skills of a warrior and the tough lessons of justice, honor, and the responsibilities of leadership. Arthur is just a boy...but the day is not far off when he will have to claim his sword that is his birthright: Excalibur.

REVIEWS ==  A series that promises to provide historic plausibility to the legend of King Arthur...the best of its type in the near quarter of a century since Mary Stewart's version of these legends burst upon the publishing scene.

REVIEWS ==  Fearing for the life of his nephew, eight-year-old Arthur Pendragon, after an assassination attempt in their beloved Camulod, Caius Merlyn Brittanicus uproots the boy and sails with an intimate group of friends and warriors to Ravenglass, seeking sanctuary from King Derek.

Though Ravenglass is supposed to be a peaceful port, danger continues to threaten and it is only through the quick thinking of the sharp-tongued, knife-wielding sorceress Shelagh that catastrophe and slaughter are averted.

Derek, who now realizes the value of the allegiances Merlyn's party bring to his land, offers the Camulodians the use of an abandoned Roman fort that is easily defensible. The bulk of the novel involves the growth of Arthur from boyhood to adolescence at the fort.

There he is taught the arts of being a soldier and a ruler, and magnificent training swords are forged in Excalibur's pattern from the metals of the Skystone.

While danger still lurks around every corner, this is a peaceful time for Britain, so this installment of the saga (The Saxon Shore, etc.) focuses primarily on the military skills Arthur masters, as well as on the building and refurbishing of an old Roman fort. Whyte has again written a historical fiction filled with vibrant detail.

Young Arthur is less absorbing a character than many of the others presented (being seemingly too saintly and prescient for his or any other world),

but readers will revel in the impressively researched facts and in how Whyte makes the period come alive.

FROM THE PUBLISHER == Throughout the widely praised Camulod Chronicles, Merlyn Britannicus has been driven by one sacred dream--to see Britain united under one just, powerful king. In The Sorcerer: Metamorphosis, it is time for the Sorcerer to fulfill his promise--to present the battle-proven Arthur as the Riothamus, the High King of Britain.

When Arthur miraculously withdraws the Sword of Kingship from the stone in which it is set, he proves himself the true and deserving king--sworn to defend the Christian faith against invaders, and to preserve Britain as a powerful, united force. The Sorcerer has fulfilled his promise. The King is crowned, Britain is united--and the face of history and legend is forever changed.

REVIEWS == As the forces of Peter Ironhair threaten the land of Camulod, Merlyn Britannicus realizes that the time has come for his ward, Arthur Pendragon, to claim the skystone sword Excalibur and take his rightful place as High King of Britain. The latest volume of Whyte's epic retelling of the Arthurian cycle marks the end of Arthur's childhood training and the beginning of the legend that surrounds his career.

Whyte firmly grounds his tale in historical detail, personal drama, and political intrigue, combining realism and wonder in a fortuitous blend.

Compellingly told, this addition to Arthurian-based fiction belongs in most libraries.

REVIEWS == Volume VI of the Arthurian saga The Camulod Chronicles follows hard upon the previous installment, The Fort at River's Bend (p. 256).

The series focuses at first on the discovery of the ore from which Excalibur is forged, the twilight of the Roman occupation of Britain,

and the formation of the Camulod colony by Merlyn Britannicus and Arthur's father, Uther Pendragon.

In the fourth volume, orphaned Arthur was still a child; in the fifth, as a result of a failed assassination, he was taken to an abandoned Roman fort, where Merlyn prepared him as a warrior to receive Excalibur at last. In that episode, young Arthur showed a commanding ability, wisdom, and common sense, but Merlyn's old enemy back in Cornwall, Peter Ironhair, posed a formidable threat.

Now, in Volume VI, the long-awaited metamorphosis takes place, with Arthur assuming his role as a Christian king ready to fight off all invaders.

Merlyn's beloved Tressa dies, and the magician himself comes so close to death that he must go in to a two-year retreat to recover his health.

During that period, Arthur grows from youth to man while leading his troops against Carthac, wielding a sword he does not know is a stand-in for Excalibur.

When he draws the true Sword from an altar stone at novel's end and girds Camulod to fight a massive fleet of new invaders, the metamorphosis is complete.

The slow pace is necessary in creating the dense experience Whyte intends. Jump in here, now that Arthur's in motion, and you can always go back to

earlier volumes if this look at the legend's subtext grabs you.

MORE ABOUT ==== A Dream of Eagles is a historical novel series written by the Canadian author Jack Whyte.

MORE ABOUT THE AUTHOR == Jack Whyte  ===  (Johnstone, Renfrewshire, Scotland, 1939) is an author and writer born and raised in Scotland, but living in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada since 1967.

Whyte's major work to date is the A Dream of Eagles series (as it is titled in Canada, but known as The Camulod Chronicles in the United States and elsewhere).

This series of historical novels presents the tale of King Arthur set against the backdrop of Roman Britain.

This retelling of the popular legend eschews the use of magic (as in T. H. White’s The Sword in the Stone) to explain Arthur’s ascent to power and instead relies on the historical condition (with some artistic license) of post-Roman Britain to support the theory that Arthur was meant to counter the anarchy left by the Roman departure from Britain in 410 AD and the subsequent colonization and invasion of Britain by various peoples from Northwestern Europe, including the Saxons, Jutes, Franks, and Angles).

Whyte incorporates both traditional Arthurian names, places and events (albeit in gaelic or latin form) as well as the names of various historical figures that have been suggested as being the possible basis for the original King Arthur legend.

The tacit implication is that Whyte's version of history is the true story that has become distorted over time to become the legend and stories of magic that we know today.

Jack Whyte served as the official bard of The Calgary Highlanders and performed several tracks of poetry and song on the 1990 album Eighty Years of Glory: The Regimental Pipes, Drums and Bard of The Calgary Highlanders.

Other

Uther, is a stand alone novel about the life of Uther Pendragon from infancy up until the end of events in The Eagles' Brood.

It serves to answer lingering questions left open by The Eagles' Brood that result from the fact that the latter is told exclusively from the perspective of Merlyn Britannicus and as such is not able to explain actions and events of which Merlyn is unaware. In this way, Uther is also an effective companion novel to The Eagles' Brood as it follows the title character and others as they grow up and wage war on Uther's main enemy, Guhlrys Lot, King of Cornwall.

New series on Scottish heroes

At a public reading in his hometown of Kelowna, British Columbia, on Thursday, November 8, 2007, Jack Whyte announced that he had, earlier that day, signed a contract for a new series of books on the heroes of his Scottish homeland.

Further information has it that the proposed trilogy will be called "The Guardians of Scotland", and will be set in 14th century Scotland during the Scottish Wars of Independence and will feature James "The Black" Douglas, William Wallace, and Robert the Bruce.

He'll start the series following completion of the Templar series which is still underway.

Short fiction
