| | | | Synopsis: | Film drama set during the final days of Franco's Spain. Reminiscing in adult life, Ana (Geraldine Chaplin) reflects on her childhood, growing up in a wealthy part of Madrid. Her childish world is haunted by visions of her beloved dead mother (also played by Chaplin) and the conviction that her philandering, neglectful father (H ctor Alterio) was responsible for the onset of her mother's fatal illness. Following her father's sudden, suspicious death in an act of adultery, Ana (played as a child by Ana Torrent) and her sisters (Conchota P rez and Maite S nchez) are raised by a stern Aunt (Mónica Randall). As tensions grow within the family and previously hidden passions rise in the confined household, Ana is poised to take drastic action...
Carlos Saura's (Carmen, Blood Wedding) touching and thought-provoking 1976 work remains one of the most important films in Spanish cinema. Released when Spain was just coming out of 40 years of Fascist rule it was nominated for a Golden Globe, and won the Grand Prize at Cannes in 1977. Cria Cuervos (English translation: Raise Ravens) centres on an amazing performance by the young actress Ana Torrent (Spirit Of The Beehive, The Haunting) as the disturbed eight-year-old girl living in Madrid with her two sisters and mourning the death of her mother, played by an ethereal Geraldine Chaplin, whom she conjures as a ghost.
In Madrid, the orphan sisters Irene, Ana and Maite are raised by their austere aunt Paulina together with their mute and crippled grandmother after the death of their mother and their military father Anselmo. Ana is a melancholic girl, fascinated by death, after seeing her mother having a painful death and her father dead in bed. |
