In 1764, King Louis XV of France granted Prince Bishop Louis-Joseph de Laval-Montmorency (1761-1802) permission to establish
a glass factory in the city of Baccarat, in the Lorraine region, in the east of France. Originally, the production consisted of windows,
mirrors and glassware, but from 1816 onwards, fine and decorative crystal was made by the factory, which employed more than 3000
workers and also enamelled and made opalin glass. Baccarat won his first gold medal at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1855.
From about 1843 to 1855, Robert was the most important interior designer of such vitreous glassware.
Jean-Francois Robert was a pupil of the painter Jean-Louis Demarne (1752-1829).
He started as an easel before he dedicated himself to painting on porcelain and opaline. In 1812 he was called by Elisha Bacciocchi,
the Grand Duchess of Tuscany and sister of the emperor to Florence, who made important orders of landscapes to him.
As a painter of landscapes and hunting scenes in the factory of Porcelain de Sèvres between 1806 and 1843 Robert represented
the imperial yachts that he was allowed to follow.
He had developed a composition for polychrome enamel, previously used on porcelain, which could now also be applied to glass;
A process patented in 1837/1838. Thanks to this success, Robert, painter in the Sèvres porcelain factory, was able to build a workshop
in Sèvres, where he painted an opaline glass of Baccarat and Saint-Louis. His motifs, derived from the classical repertoire of nineteenth-century
floral painters, are always executed with a precise realism.
From 1837 to 1855, Jean Francois Robert led the most important decoration workshop on opaline. This workshop is located in Sèvres,
next to the Manufacture Royale. He becomes the appointed decorator of; The house Launay, Hautin & Cie, the keepers of the crystal works of
Bercy, Choisy, Baccarat and Saint Louis. This association ends in 1855, when Jean-François Robert, seventy-three, finally retired.

In 1764 verleende koning Lodewijk XV van Frankrijk aan prins Bisschop Kardinaal Louis-Joseph de Laval-Montmorency (1761-1802)
toestemming om een glasfabriek te stichten in de stad Baccarat, in de regio Lorraine, in het oosten van Frankrijk.
Aanvankelijk bestond de productie uit ruiten, spiegels en glaswerk, maar vanaf 1816 werd fijn en decoratief kristal gemaakt door de fabriek,
die meer dan 3000 arbeiders tewerk stelde en ook geëmailleerd en opaline glas maakte.
Baccarat won zijn eerste gouden medaille op de wereldtentoonstelling van Parijs in 1855.
Van ongeveer 1843 tot 1855 was Robert de belangrijkste binnenhuisarchitect van dergelijk glasachtig glaswerk.
Jean-Francois Robert was een leerling van de schilder Jean-Louis Demarne (1752-1829).
Hij begon als een schildersezel voordat hij zich toelegde op het schilderen op porselein en opaline.
In 1812 werd hij door Elisa Bacciocchi, de groothertogin van Toscane en zuster van de keizer naar Florence geroepen,

in Sèvres bouwen, waar hij een opaline glas schilderde van Baccarat en Saint-Louis. Zijn motieven, ontleend aan het klassieke repertoire
van negentiende-eeuwse bloemenschilders, worden altijd met een nauwgezet realisme uitgevoerd.
Van 1837 tot 1855 leidt Jean Francois Robert de belangrijkste decoratieworkshop over opaline. Deze workshop bevindt zich in Sèvres,
naast de Manufacture Royale. Hij wordt de aangewezen decorateur van; Het huis Launay, Hautin & Cie, de bewaarders van de kristalwerken van
Bercy, Choisy, Baccarat en Saint Louis. Deze associatie eindigt in 1855, toen Jean-François Robert, drieënzeventig, eindelijk met pensioen ging.
