Rare original antique engraving print from an 1860s illustrated journal. This print depicts a crowded sumo Wrestling Match in Osaka Japan. Above the picture is an article about the match.

Sumo ("striking one another") is a form of competitive full-contact wrestling where a rikishi (wrestler) attempts to force his opponent out of a circular ring (dohyo) or into touching the ground with any body part other than the soles of his feet (usually by throwing, shoving or pushing him down). The sport originated in Japan, the only country where it is practiced professionally. It is considered a gendai budo, which refers to modern Japanese martial art, but the sport has a history spanning many centuries. Many ancient traditions have been preserved in sumo, and even today the sport includes many ritual elements, such as the use of salt purification, from Shinto.

The print is very large (folio size), measuring approximately 11 x 15 inches (28 x 38 cm). The picture fills half of it, measuring about 9.5 x 7 inches, with a caption below it.

The page is in excellent condition for its age.
There is text/photos on the back of the print. See scan for an accurate view of the condition.
