Short Flashes by Polish photographer Wiktoria Wojciechowska is a series taken during her time in North East China. Intrepid, rain-drenched cyclists making their way during the monsoon season are captured with the aid of a flashgun as they rush by her. Though at first the photographs appear vibrant and playful, the fleeting faces emerging from their brightly coloured anoraks offer a melancholy visual metaphor for the photographer’s own struggles connecting with people. Serves as a wistful physical reference to Wojciechowska’s desire for a sense of belonging, or as the photographer herself puts it, ‘a new family album to remember the people she never knew’.

Short Flashes won numerous awards, including the Humanity Photo Award, International Photography Awards, Young Talents La Quatrieme Image, and Oskar Barnack Newcomer Award 2015.

Short Flashes was nominated for the Arles Author Book Award 2016.
