CARYOTA OBTUSA 'THAILAND' - GIANT FISHTAIL PALM - CARYOTA GIGAS

Caryota obtusa is a huge nut palm or a fish tail like a giant palm tree. It occurs in a vast area between Northeast India, Southwest China and northern Thailand (hence this form comes from), it always grows in the mountains. It is huge, has a very tall, thick, lonely trunk. It grows very fast. Its massive, flat-held leaves make it easily recognizable, it looks like a giant tree fern. Since it grows quite high (up to 1,000 m in India and 1,600 m in Thailand), there is a good chance it will grow in cooler conditions and may even tolerate a degree or two of frost. Such a fast growth rate must be supported by fertile and moist soil and abundant watering, especially in dry weather.
