This is a set of FLAT fuses for your VW T4 Transporter Van (1990 - 2003).

It includes :
  • 2 x 50 Amp Fuses (as fitted as standard for Radiator / Cooling Fans)
  • 2 x 30 Amp Fuses (Lower Amp option for Radiator/Cooling Fans - see below)
  • 2 x 80 Amp Fuses (Glowplugs + 1 Spare).

The radiator / cooling fan fuses are located near the battery on the left side of the vehicle, either near the headlamp, or nearer the battery. These are 50 Amp (50A) as standard. The glowplug fuse (80A) is located to the right of the engine bay above the air filter. Remember left and right is always when sitting in the van, and looking forward through the windscreen. Please verify the existence of your fuses in the engine bay before purchase, to ensure you do need this set.

Here are some pictures :

The radiator /cooling fan fuses are 50 Amp as standard (50A).

Because the T4 engines are very heat efficient, the cooling fans do not switch on unless the engine gets quite hot, such as continuous high revs (long motorway journeys), when full of equipment, at long idle, or when towing. Because of this, the cooling fans can seize up from lack of use, and either blow the fuses OR melt the wires and set the front of the fan on fire, such as in the picture below :

It is a known problem, that when the fans seize they may not blow the 50 amp fuses fitted by VW, and for this reason I include 2 x 30 Amp fuses, which are the lowest rating in this style of fuse. This will increase the chance of the fuses blowing if the fans seize, and in such a case prevent a fire from the wires burning instead.
I have covered over 5000 miles in my T4 with 30 Amp fuses instead of the 50 Amp, with the fans coming on and off as appropriate without blowing/affecting the 30 amp fuses, so I KNOW they work as a reduced amp replacement for piece of mind.

If your van is getting hot on the motorways, or at idle, you should check your radiator/cooling fan fuses, if they are blown as in the picture above, you need to replace them AND check if your cooling fans are seized (and wiring), if they are then you need to replace the fans, so that they are there when you need them!
