Nigella damascena is an annual flower from the
Ranunculaceae family that grows to a height of 50 cm. It is native to the
Mediterranean, North Africa and Asia. From June to August they bloom in blue,
red, pink shades and white. It likes sunny positions the most, but it also
thrives in partial shade. It grows on all types of soil, tolerates drought well
and is not attacked by any pests or diseases. In addition to the flower, it is
a decorative cocoon in which seeds develop.
The seeds are sown in the spring directly to the
place where plant is predicted to grow, because transplanting does not tolerate
best. It can also be sown in autumn because seeds are resistant to winter and
low temperatures. If sown in the spring, it would be good to leave the seeds in
the refrigerator for a few days to spend cold stratification which accelerates
germination.
Once sown, once it blooms without problems it will
disperse on its own every year.
The package contains 100 seeds of Nigella damascena
harvested in July and July 2023 in my garden. In addition to the seeds, you
also receive instructions for sowing and care.
VERY IMPORTANT NOTE - Nigella damascena contains the
alkaloid damascene, so this species should not be confused with black cumin
(Nigella sativa). Although traditionally used in the Middle East and North
Africa, where seeds used as a spice and as a medicine, studies have shown that
the alkaloid damascene is poisonous, and that the seeds of this plant in larger
quantities are also poisonous. Therefore, any use for nutritional and medicinal
purposes is at your own risk!
