 TROPICAL PLANTAE
Grafted Avocado

Grafted avocado trees are highly sought after by avocado enthusiasts and home gardeners alike due to their numerous benefits. These trees are created by grafting a desired avocado variety onto a compatible rootstock, resulting in a tree that combines the desirable traits of the scion (upper part) and the rootstock (lower part). Grafted avocado trees offer several advantages over trees grown from seeds.

One of the main benefits of grafted avocado trees is their ability to produce high-quality and consistent fruit. The scion used in grafting is carefully selected from a superior avocado variety known for its delicious taste, creamy texture, or abundant yield. This ensures that you can enjoy the same desirable characteristics in the avocados produced by the grafted tree, whether it's the popular Hass variety, the smooth and buttery Fuerte, or other sought-after cultivars.

Another advantage of grafted avocado trees is their ability to bear fruit at a relatively young age. Unlike seed-grown trees that may take several years to mature and produce fruit, grafted avocado trees can start producing avocados within a few years of planting. This means you can enjoy a bountiful harvest of delicious avocados sooner and with less waiting time.

Grafted avocado trees also tend to have improved disease resistance and overall vigor compared to seed-grown trees. The rootstock used in grafting is often selected for its resistance to common avocado diseases and pests, ensuring that the grafted tree has a better chance of staying healthy and thriving in various environmental conditions.

When it comes to planting and caring for grafted avocado trees, there are a few key considerations. Avocados prefer a sunny location with well-drained soil. They are relatively drought-tolerant but benefit from regular watering, especially during dry periods. Fertilizing the tree with a balanced fertilizer formulated for fruit trees can provide the necessary nutrients for healthy growth and fruit production.

Pruning is also important for maintaining the shape and size of the tree, as well as promoting airflow and sunlight penetration. It is recommended to prune the tree during the dormant season to remove dead or diseased branches and encourage new growth.

In conclusion, grafted avocado trees offer the advantage of producing high-quality, consistent fruit, early fruiting, and improved disease resistance. By planting and caring for a grafted avocado tree, you can enjoy the pleasure of growing your own avocados and savor their creamy goodness. Whether you enjoy them in salads, on toast, or as the star ingredient in guacamole, having a grafted avocado tree in your garden can provide you with a bountiful supply of this beloved fruit.

Dead or Alive?

Plants die. So, to determine if your plant is still among the living, scratch a small area of bark on the trunk. You can rub it with a coin or fingernail. If you see brown or black underneath, then the plant is dead. If you see green, then the plant is alive and will leaf out again. If the time is fall through spring, the plant is likely in full or partial dormancy. If the time is during the growing season, then the leaves may have temporarily dropped as a self pruning measure. This acts as a reset switch for the plant and is normally just temporary.
