William Lendrum ''Billy'' Mitchell [1879 1936] was a United States Army general who is regarded as the father of the United States Air Force. Mitchell began his military career 1898 and was a veteran of the Spanish American War. During World War I he gained experience working with the French and British Air Forces and was given command of all American air combat units in France and ended the war as the Chief of the Air Service. During the 1920's Mitchell began conducting and perfecting aerial bombing of military ships which caused difficulties with the navy and army commanders but eventually caused the military budget to include more funds in the development of air power. In 1926 Mitchell resigned from the service after a highly disputed court-martial. Listed for auction is an attractive framed display which contains a [TLS] typed letter signed by General William Lendrum ''Billy'' Mitchell. The letter is typed on the general's personal letterhead, Sapiens Quiassiduus, Mitchell and dated ''Boxwood'' Middleburg, Va. May 18, 1932. The letter has interesting content and is addressed to noted aviation pioneer Harold Pitcairn of the Pitcairn Aircraft Company. The letter reads as follows, ''My dear Mr. Pitcairn- I am enclosing a letter from Major Bernard A. Law, who is in the airplane business in Mexico. The letter explains itself. Law is an enthusiastic airman and I believe would be a good salesman. I should think that the work which he speaks of would be very easily done by an autogiro. Hoping to see you before long, and with best regards, ''Wm. Mitchell'' in black fountain pen above his typed name. The letter measures 7.25 x 10.50 inches, it has trivial toning otherwise it is in fine condition and displays very well with a bold signature. The display has been centered around an attractive b/w formal military image of the general and mounted below is a professionally engraved metal plaque which reads as follows, ''William Mitchell The Father of The United States Air Force. December 29, 1879 - February 19, 1936. Spanish - American War & World War I. Distinguished Service Cross - Distinguished Service Medal - World War I Victory Medal - Congressional Gold Medal.'' The display has been professionally assembled with great attention to details and triple matted as follows. The outer matte in a beige linen which has been accented with a gold and a dark blue inner matte. The display has been assembled in a quality ornate gold wood frame to the dimensions of 19.00 x 16.00 inches. The autograph of general Mitchell is exceedingly rare to obtain for the military collector. The autograph offered is authentic, addressed to a prominent aviation pioneer and is a desirable example of this prominent United States Army commander and aviation pioneer. We promise absolutely no disappointments or simply return. We have listed a nice collection of military, aviation, explorers, political and astronaut autographs.
