One packet of more than 250 seeds.
Raising hybrid Streptocarpus/Cape Primrose from seed is a great indoor project for gardeners and plant lovers.
These
seeds are collected in autumn 2023 winter 2024 from our hand-pollinated plants -- including some of the plants in the photos and many others. Flowers from 3
to 6 cm across are carried on wire-thin stems rising from loose
rosettes of velvet-soft, arching leaves. Colours range from white and yellow
through pale rose and lavender to deep violet, midnight blue, and rich
cerise. Some flowers have ornate markings; others have boldly
coloured contrasting centers.
These seeds can be shipped safely at any time of year. We have tested seeds stored outdoors for several days at temperatures colder than -20C and they germinated just fine.
We test our seeds every 3-4 months and add new seeds all the time. Our routine tests produce better than 80% germination.
We sometimes post photos of plants raised form our seeds on the blog Primrose Fields: Scenes for a Garden in Edmonton, Canada.
Seeds
sprout 2-3 weeks after sowing, and first flower buds appear 4-6 months
later. Display your potted plants outdoors in summer, in a cool, shady
spot, or keep them indoors in a window or under lights. A well-tended
plant at its peak, usually beginning in early summer, will cascade with
blossoms for many weeks, and can go on flowering, at a lesser rate,
through autumn and into the darkest days of winter. Streps
are easy, rewarding houseplants all year round. We have them sitting in
windows on every side of the house, where they flourish in any natural
light.
The
seeds are very small and a little tricky to handle, but each packet is
sure to contain more than the stated number. We also provide a page of
instructions to help get your project started.
