CLASSIC CHILDREN'S STORY HAS SOLD MORE THAN 50-MILLION COPIES

SINCE ITS PUBLICATION IN 1908, THIS NOVEL HAS SOLD MORE THAN 50-MILLION COPIES and has been published in some 36 languages, possibly more.  It is truly one of the great children's literature classics and a worthy inclusion in this series.  Written by the Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery, it tells the story of an 11-year-old orphan girl, Anne Shirley, who is sent by an orphanage to help out on a farm at a small town on Prince Edward Island.

The family had actually requested that a boy be sent to help with the chores - and Anne is sent by mistake.  Should she be returned to the orphanage?   Anne soon brightens up Green Gables with her imagination and engaging ways and so she stays.

ANNE DOES VERY WELL IN HER STUDIES BUT, IN THE SPIRIT OF MELODRAMA, a sad event in her adoptive family affects her plans and she makes sacrifices to help them.  The story is full of interesting characters, some nice, some charming, and some not so good.  Its appeal has been universal and it has been widely adapted for films, television, musicals and plays.  It is often chosen as a set-book for schools.  A number of sequels have been published - taking red-haired Anne's age from the 11 years of the first novel to a middle-aged 40 in the last, Anne of Ingleside.

Anne is especially popular in Japan where the book has been included in the national school curriculum since 1952.  Some Japanese couples travel to Prince Edward Island to be married and teenage Japanese girls have been known to arrive there with their hair dyed red and done up in pigtails like Anne's.

THIS VOLUME IS ONE OF THE POPULAR SERIES OF CLASSIC BOOKS for young readers printed for Barnes & Noble by the Sterling Publishing Company.  They are attractive and nicely designed leather bounds that are likely to be collected in sets not only for reading enjoyment but also for a handsome display on the family bookshelves.

Several of them have been issued - internationally favorite titles like The Wizard of Oz, The Little Mermaid, Grimm's Fairy Tales, The Wind in The Willows, Aladdin and the Arabian Nights, The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood, Alice in Wonderland, Heidi, Aesop's Fables, The Blue Fairy Book and the like. Young readers are certain to enjoy them, but so will adults who value quality products - and who may be tempted to dip into them for happy bedtime reading memories.

THIS BOOK HAS BEEN BOUND IN BONDED LEATHER AND IS BRAND NEW, still in its plastic wrapping and never read.  The cover design is in yellow with a foliage design in green and gold and an illustration of Anne in a rural setting.  The page ends are gilded for an attractive appearance as well as protection of the paper.  It has a ribbon sewn-in page-marker that can be used to teach small readers that bent page corners will spoil the book.

This volume is illustrated with the evocative black-and-white drawings of M. A. and W. A. J. Claus  (we show some examples above).   Since it is new and never read there are no signs of prior ownership such as an inscription or a bookplate.  It awaits its first happy owner.  It is of gift quality.
