In the ancient writing of Pliny the Elder, we know of the Druidic priestly celebration of the mistletoe plant. The Victorians added the kissing and romance part. Druid priest would go into the forests at night, after the Winter Solstice. In a special ceremony that lasted five days after the new moon, they would find and cut down the mistletoe from Oak trees, using only a silver or gold knife. The mistletoe was never allowed to touch the ground for fear of contaminating its power. The priests then distributed the springs of mistletoe among the people to protect them from evil and enhance the power of their prayers and wishes.
