Vintage Pueblo Indian Large Folk Art Carved Cottonwood Katsina Figure or Kachina Doll. Probably 1940's-70's

Found in Corrales, New Mexico, this unusual, large, and vibrantly painted carved Katsina figure was possibly created to be sold at a Trading Post along Route 66 of that time period.  The figure has robust proportions and cuts quite the figure with his elaborate detachable tableta (dance headdress), highly embellished kilt, jewelry, and painted details on various parts of his outfit.  The paint is exuberant and carefully applied. The unpainted soles of his feet show good age and allow identification of the wood as cottonwood root.  While the Pueblo of origin is unclear, Tesuque Pueblo seems to be a possibility.

This engaging Pueblo carving would be a good addition to a collection of Southwest Indian Folk Art.

Condition:  Excellent. No breaks, missing parts, or repairs.  Painted surface is also excellent with minimal wear.

Dimensions:  13-3/4" tall, 5-1/2" wide at elbows.  Tableta (detachable): 3-7/8" x 3-1/4"
