[1950 UNITED NATIONS ORIGINAL RADIO SCRIPTS ON ATOMIC ENERGY WITH SOME EINSTEIN CONTENT / HANDWRITTEN PRODUCER/DIRECTOR GERALD KEAN EDITING AND TIMING NOTES] THREE VERSIONS: THE YEAR OF DECISION [Atomic Energy Show] written by Mavor Moore, starring John Garfield, United Nations Radio in association with the Mutual Network, Sunday, June 18, 1950, (:00-10:00 PM EDST (Final pre-broadcast script), Director…Mavor Moore, Producer…Gerald Kean…Composer-Conductor…Louis Applebaum, in upper right corner in aqua ink “Kean work copy” [Gerald Kean, producer/director, see notes], going into aspects of nuclear energy both good and bad variously with remarks by Robert Oppenheimer, UN Secretary General Trygve Lie, president Truman, Bernard Baruch, disarmament expert Otto Frey, and other notables besides Einstein…THREE VERSIONS OF THE SCRIPT: (1) original ribbon copy of radio program script with copious director Gerald Kean’s editing and timing notes, about 45 pages including a couple of identified inserts (e. g., 19A), last half misnumbered with the page 22 followed by page numbered 33 with pencil note of this beside the mistake, the script is confirmed as complete by sequence of numbering of paragraphs from 1 through 318; (2) no cover page, first page on United Nations/Nations Unies Department of Public Information – Radio Division letterhead, opens “Dr. Einstein, would you say atomic energy is here to stay?”, closes with “Yours…….very truly, Albert Einstein”, typescript looking like word-processing of the period, 42 pages, producer/director Gerald Kean handwritten edits and timing notes throughout; (3) typescript looking like word-processing of the period, 43 pages plus (detached) cover page on United Nations/Nations Unies Department of Public Information – Radio Division letterhead…COMPLETE PARTS 1 and 2 of the program: Radio Classic website has an audio identified as Part 1 of this Year of Decision broadcast with the date January 1,1948, i. e., “Year of Decision: A Progress Report on the Atom (Part 1), 01-Jan-1948, 00:30:36 [running time], American actor John Garfield reports in this two-part feature about atomic energy, after US President Harry Truman announced that his country was in possession of an atomic bomb”…there’s no mentione” of Einstein, but he is in this Part 1 broadcast as confirmed by the Radio Classic audio speaking the lines found in the three scripts listed here…the Radio Classics audio goes to page 22 of the scripts listed here dated June 18, 1950, with the rest of this script being Part 2…WorldCat/OCLC records 6 parts apparently on a recording at the U. of Missouri – Kansas City (no other copies recorded as of 1/20/22), no audio of parts other than Part 1 at Radio Classics have been found for clarification on dates or parts actually written and broadcast; RARE, unique, one-of-a-kind item with the Gerald Kean handwritten editing and timing notes apparently of partial script of a program broadcast over a few years…WorldCat/OCLC note: “Program includes reports and pre-recorded sound clips from interviews and speeches dealing with the scientific advances and potential, both beneficial and harmful, of nuclear energy. S. Office of War Information(OWI) during World War II and radio programming in the decades after the War, notably working with the legendary Himan Brown in writing many radio scripts under different pen names for Brown’s classic radio show “CBS Radio Mystery Theater” CONDITION: Gerlad Kean working copy worn but complete and legible except for a few words, 2 other copies with UN letterhead on first pages paper somewhat brittle, more so at edges with some small chips/losses.
